Curling Leagues

League descriptions for recent seasons are listed below, and can be used to get an idea of the kinds of leagues that are available at our club. Please note that league formats and rules change regularly. For the latest information about league offerings, refer to postings on the club Google group, which is linked from the member website.

League signups for the second half of the 2017-18 season will open December 29. Below is a description of the league formats and point limits.

Please note there are some changes to certain leagues: Creed-O will have individual signups and teams will be league-chair assembled; McNaughton will reinstate restrictions on the skip position (“regular” skips are encouraged to play other positions on the team, but not skip); Wednesday Open will also have individual signups and teams will be league-chair assembled. We encourage experienced players to sign up for Sunday and Wednesday leagues to encourage player development.

As a result of the large number of newer curlers we have who are in need of leagues to play in, we are restricting double shifting on Sundays to first give everyone a chance to get on a team/league, and then allow backfill with those who want additional opportunities to curl on Sundays.

The current restriction on double shifting on Mondays is also still in effect.

There is also a new open league forming on Fridays at 2:30pm, details are listed below.

League sign-ups are now fully open including all Monday and Sunday leagues.

There have been a few modifications from last year’s 1st half events:

Botham (Craig Brown – Chair):
The only update to the Botham event will be that teams can continue into the Waddell event with the same team if they choose.

Leifer (Randy Blumer – Chair):
The Leifer event will have a maximum of 50 points per team. This change is meant to encourage a more even distribution of teams between the Monday events.

5 and under (Sunday Open) – (Aaron Bertsch – Chair)
There has been a change in the league format meant to encourage player development among newer curlers. The guidelines for forming a team are as follows:
– 3 players must have 5 years or fewer experience curling each
– Total team points cannot exceed 25
– Teams made up of entirely 5 & Under curlers will not be disallowed, but for teams with less experience it is highly encouraged to find a higher pointed player to join as your 4th teammate.
– Lineup is up to each team, but the idea is for a more experienced player to be on the back end to mentor and advise the newer members on strategy, technique, etiquette, and spirit of the game.

The first half of the 2015-2016 season runs Oct. 26 to Jan. 14 and the second half runs Jan. 17 to Mar. 18. Many Leagues alternate starting times each week. Further information can be found at madisoncurlingclub.com, “Along the Hog Line” or a club bulletin board.
