CONGRATULATIONS

GOOD TIMES

The Madison Mixed Invitational Bonspiel took place February 8-10, and bonspiel chairs Richard Berling and Deesa Pence were pleased to host 18teams from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Ohio. They wish to thank the many volunteers who helped make the spiel successful by donating food, raffle items and most importantly their time. They especially want to thank the Leppings for Taco Night and Chef Mark McDermid for preparing a genuine New Orleans dinner for this Mardi Gras celebration. An added bonus was the college student dancing wait staff who delayed their 9 p.m. departure time because “they were having too much fun” at MCC – proof positive that curlers really know how to party.

Richard and Deesa are already seeking chairs for the 2013 Madison Mixed and ask for any suggestions you may have. Piped onto the ice by Tom Greenhalgh for the final draw were the following teams:

1EW: Tim Ebert, Shelly Kosal, Grace Gabower, Todd

            Gabower (Madison)

            Ed Wallander (Madison)

HE’S A LIFESAVER

Kudos to Dan Lynch, who wasted no time in starting chest compressions on a fellow curler who suffered a heart attack while on the ice at the National Senior Men’s Bonspiel in Wauwatosa recently. Others soon came to his aid, the gentleman was revived and transported to a hospital, where he underwent double by-pass surgery a few days later and is reportedly doing well. Stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive…

MCC MERCHANDISE WEEK MARCH 11-16

IN MEMORIAM

We extend our condolences to Tim and Kim Ebert and other family members, on the passing of Tim’s father, Russell Ebert, age 82, on February 20, 2012, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

We also note the passing of Destin Baxley, age 27, on February 15. Destin curled with the juniors and in other events with his Big Brother Ken Neidhart.

JUNIOR NATIONALS FOLLOWUP

It was an action-packed week with 10 junior women’s teams and 10 junior men’s teams competing for the honor to represent the U.S. at the World Junior Championships in Ostersund, Sweden, March 3-11. From the impressive Opening Ceremony on January 28th to the awarding of the medals on February 4th, members of the Madison Curling Club stepped up to make this experience the best ever for the curlers and spectators alike. By all accounts, we were successful. Event Chair Paul Incha is to be commended for an incredible amount of planning and for assembling a truly hard-working support cast.

Special thanks to Mike and Linda Fonger for their steadfast work running the kitchen (those warm-out-of-the-oven cookies were enjoyed by all); to Lori Mountford and Paul Beebe for handling the officiating detail (and to all the timers and on-ice observers who carried out the tasks); to Joel Dietz and all who helped with the web site, live scoring and live streaming of the games on sheet three; to photographer Dan Wiza, capturing the moment; to Barb Morton and Hannah Gaines for merchandise sales; to Kathy Vinge for handling the opening reception, the closing banquet and hospitality all week; to Miranda Hofmann at the admissions table; to Richard Berling, volunteer recruit- ment; to Jeremy Roe, Mark Hartman and Scott Templeton for working on sponsorship, advertising and program; to Mike Fraboni and the ice crew; to Tony Wendricks, beverages; to Mike Harried who made the arrangements for the bleachers; to Tim Brickner, media liaison; and Tim Ebert, MCC President.

Making it into the Page playoff round in the junior women’s division were: 1) WI2 team Becca Hamilton, Tara Peterson, Karlie Koenig and Sophie Brorson; 2) MN2 team Cory Christensen, Elizabeth Busche, Anna Bauman and Sonja Bauman; 3) NY team Hannah Ely, Rebecca Andrew, Abigail Morrison and Rebecca Vanarsdall; 4) MN1 team Miranda Solem, Becca Funk (playing for the injured Mackenzie Lank), Julie Lilla and Chelsea Solem. In the one-two game, Christensen defeated Hamilton 8-7 and in the three-four game, Solem defeated Ely 6-2. Christensen advanced to the finals, then Solem defeated Hamilton 8-6 in the semifinals to meet Christensen in the championship game, with Christensen winning 10-8. Of note, the Christensen team has added Becca Funk to its roster as fifth player, presently at the Worlds.

On the junior men’s side of the ledger, the following teams made it to the Page playoffs: 1) Massachusetts team Stephen Dropkin, Korey Dropkin, Thomas Howell, Derek Corbett, Ross Cameron; 2) WI2 team Blake Morton, Marcus Fonger, Tommy Juszczyk, Calvin Weber and Chris Bond; 3) WI1 team Evan Jensen, Zachary Taylor, Ron Bichler, Kelly Traska and Ben Miller; 4) ND2 team Kyle Kakela, Ryan Westby, Spencer Tuskowski, Kyson Smith and Paul Tharalson. In the one-two game, Dropkin defeated Morton 6-2 and in the three-four game, Kakela defeated Jensen 6-5. Dropkin advanced to the finals, then Morton defeated Kakela 6-1 in the semifinals to meet Dropkin in the championship game, which Dropkin won 9-8.

USWCA NEWS

Our USWCA Rep Judi Page, along with Dae Jean Jahnke (serving as Secretary to incoming USWCA President Bridget Matzke) attended the annual meeting during the recent national bonspiel in St. Paul, and reports that Carla Lynch has been selected to participate in next fall’s USWCA Senior Women’s Friendship Tour. The 16 players, representing a cross-section of U.S. curling clubs, will tour and curl in British Columbia the first two weeks of November. Congratulations, Carla!

In other USWCA news, the 2012 Senior Women’s Event will be held at the Mayfield Curling Club in Ohio, November 28-December 2. Applications will be due September 7, before our season begins, so plan ahead if you wish to attend this one. The Portage Curling Club will be hosting the 2013 National USWCA Event; applications for this one will be due December 14, with more details to be provided next fall.

MEMBER CONCERNS

Here’s wishing a speedy recovery to Maureen Kind, Tom Hilt, and Steve Webster following recent surgeries. We continue to send healing thoughts to Bridget Matzke, and to Cindy Lawton, who is undergoing another round of chemotherapy.

HERRIES MAXWELL TROPHY RETURNS TO U.S.

The 20 curlers on the 2012 USCA Scotland Tour successfully returned the Herries Maxwell Trophy to the United States after playing 147 competitive and 10 exhibition games, besting the Scots by a score of 1,075 to 797. The three-and-a-half week tour took the U.S. team to 20 venues across Scotland, from Inverness to Dumfries and Stranraer to Aberdeen.

Dating from 1805 and similar to the Trafalgar Vases awarded to heroes of the Battle of Trafalgar, the Trophy was donated in 1951 by Commander D. Herries Maxwell for competition between touring curling teams of Scotland and USA on a home and away basis. The Tour has taken place every five years since 1952, with the USA winning six times and Scotland seven.

Tour Captain Mark Swandby reports that the competition was keen and the camaraderie, fellowship and friendship were over-whelming. He extended his congratulations to their Scottish opponents for the many hard-fought games, and further con-gratulated his own teammates for emerging victorious. The Tour will next take place on U.S. soil in 2017, at which time the U.S. hopes to defend its possession of the Trophy and do its utmost to match the warm hospitality shown by the Scots.

In addition to Tour Captain Swandby, other tour members from Wisconsin included Dan Brunt, David Carlson, Bob Dixon, Rich Lepping, and Bill Rhyme.

DISNEY WORLD PRINCESS IN OUR MIDST

We’ve seen her out on the ice and around the clubroom, sporting what appears to be a very pretty tiara, with pink feathers no less, and a lovely gold crown medal draped around her neck, so we know she must have accomplished something very special. Who is this royalty mingling with us commoners? Why, it’s none other than MCC Secretary Dae Jean Jahnke, who ran the Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World on February 26th. There were 19,000 participants, of whom 95% were women. Dae Jean ran the 13.1 miles in 2:23.10, averaging 11 minutes a mile. She finished 3,972 overall and 127 in her age category which was 900 strong. The course went from the Epcot parking lot, wound through the Magic Kingdom, back into Epcot and finished in the Epcot parking lot. Congratulations, Dae Jean!

POTTINGER AND McCORMICK TEAMS PREVAIL

Congratulations to the team of Allison Pottinger, Nicole Joraanstad, Natalie Nicholson, and Tabitha Peterson, who captured the gold medal at the National Women’s Curling Championship at the IceWorks Skating Complex in Philadel-phia, February 11-18. Cassie Potter’s team earned the silver medal and the Aileen Sormunen team won the bronze medal. The Pottinger team will represent the U.S. at the 2012 Ford World Women’s Championship in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, March 17-25.

The Men’s National Curling Championship team of Heath McCormick, Bill Stopera, Martin Sather, Dean Gemmell, and Matt Hames, won the gold medal and will advance to the 2012 Capital One World Men’s Championship to be held in Basel, Switzerland, March 31-April 8. Pete Fenson’s team earned the silver medal and the John Shuster team won the bronze. The team of Craig Brown, Kroy Nernberger, Matt Hamilton and Derrick Casper finished in fourth place, having lost to the Shuster team in the three-four game of the Page Playoffs.

Also at stake in this year’s competition was the fact that the top two men’s and women’s teams secured berths in the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

PROGRAM SELLERS RAISE FUNDS FOR MCC

A huge THANK YOU goes out to Carla Lynch, Charlie Maring and Scott Reich for organizing program sales at the Kohl Center for the Badger women’s basketball games, Badger men’s basketball games and the WIAA state high school wrestling tournament. Thanks also to all the MCC members who volunteered many hours selling programs. These program sales provide much needed revenue for the Madison Curling Club, and are a money-making opportunity we would not want to lose.

2012 ROTARY WORLD CURLING QUALIFIERS

The Rotary World Championship takes place every two years and this year, it will be held at the Potomac Curling Club in Washington, DC, April 1-6. The team of Paul Matzke, Rich Lepping, Jim Sirianni, and Ted Tibbitts has qualified to compete in the 2012 Championships. Canada, Scotland and the U.S. each have three teams entered, plus one from England. Good luck and good curling to these gentlemen!

PASSING THE CHEF’S HAT

The spatula and chef’s hat have officially been passed to Angus McKechnie, Eric Torre, and Bryan Ashley, whose first steak week February 27-March 1, netted a profit of $1,600 for the Madison Curling Foundation. This new steak team learned from the best and we thank Tony Wendricks for his many years of manning the grill and his service to the Madison Curling Club.

SATURDAY MORNING PICKUP CURLING WRAPUP

Whenever the ice was available Saturday mornings, 30 to 48 curlers gathered for pick-up curling. Thank you to Dick Nawratil, Beth Hilt, Cate Harrington, and Jim Hoelzel for organizing the teams and to Marty Nawratil for preparing most of the lunches that were served afterward. Those $3 lunches added to the Saturday morning enjoyment and resulted in a $300 profit with which they purchased raffle tickets for the carpet, with any winnings going back to the club… great idea! Thanks also to Tom Hilt and others who volunteered and to Dave Brown for early morning ice prep for our Saturday curlers.

OUT WITH THE CARPET

The season is winding down, but we still have a few fun events on the curling front. The Board and the membership have been volunteering and working very hard this past year to raise money for the “Take OutThe Loan” campaign and future improvements to our beautiful club. I know that we have been asking a lot out of all of you, but we get a great return on our investments. We love this wonderful game. It fuels our passion and addiction for competition. Win or lose, we are proud of this game, our team-mates, and our friends.

As we look down at our feet while we are stretching before a game… ummmmmm, we notice the duct tape holding the carpet together (worn out six years ago!). Dan Lynch is running the carpet raffle and you see the results so far, but we are still a long way from our goal. The plan all along has been to sell tickets outside of our membership, and we continue to pursue that goal.

We’ve sold 365 tickets. Only 22% of our members have responded thus far. If the other 385 members bought or sold one ticket each, we’d have close to the amount we need to refinish the floors and purchase new carpeting. But it is not a given. The method of finishing will last the life of our club. No more wearing out after eight or nine years. We are calling on the 88% to try and sell or buy one ticket and we are on our way! A couple of bonspiels left out there, so let’s make this happen! There is still time – the drawing is mid April at the annual meeting.

Tim Ebert, MCC President

OPEN HOUSE A GREAT SUCCESS

The February 18th Open House at the Madison Curling Club was well attended, with more than 100 interested persons trying out

our favorite wintertime sport. Garret Perry organized the morning session; thank you to all the club members who helped.

WORLD WHEELCHAIR CHAMPIONSHIP FOLLOWUP

The U.S. National Wheelchair team captained by Patrick McDonald, with David Palmer, Jimmy Joseph, Penny Greely, and Tim Kelly finished in fifth place at the World Championships in Chuncheon City, South Korea. The Russian team won the gold, Korea won the silver, and China won the bronze.

NAME TAG REMINDER

A number of member name tags remain in a box on the counter between the kitchen and the office. Please pick them up soon and wear them with pride!

NOMINATING COMMITTEE SEEKING CANDIDATES
