League descriptions for the most recent season are listed below, and can be used to get an idea of the kinds of leagues that are available at our club. Please note that league formats and rules change regularly.
“Open” indicates any combination of men or women on a team.
Creed O’
Sundays, rotating 2:55PM / 5:05PM / 7:15PM, both halves
This event provides an opportunity for newer skips, seconds, and leads to play with, and learn from, an experienced MCC mentor at third. Shift captains will confirm skips. Creed O’ teams will be formed by a skip draft. Skips will be 4 –7 points, with a combined 14-point team limit for skip, second, and lead. Due to popularity of Sunday events, participation is limited to only one Sunday league, however, Creed O’ thirds may also curl in either Loew OR Daniels.
Loew
Sundays, rotating 2:55PM / 5:05PM / 7:15PM, first half
This event provides an opportunity for thirds, seconds, and leads to curl at a higher position than they normally play. The Loew Event has a 35 point team limit where those who skip in leagues Monday – Thursday are restricted from playing the skip position. Due to popularity of Sunday events, participation is limited to only one Sunday league, however, Creed O’ thirds may also curl in either Loew OR Daniels. Those who skip in Monday-Thursday leagues may not sub at skip in this league.
Daniels
Sundays, rotating 2:55PM / 5:05PM / 7:15PM, first half
This event has a 39 point team limit with no restriction on the skip position. Due to popularity of Sunday events, participation is limited to only one Sunday league, however, Creed O’ thirds may also curl in either Loew OR Daniels.
Hafeman
Mondays, 2 PM start time, first half
This event is intended to give provide an extra time to curl during the week. 56 point limit.
Leifer
Mondays, alternates 6:35/8:45PM start time, first half
The primary intent of this event is to give members a second night to curl during the week. 50 point limit. Due to popularity of Monday evening events, participation is limited to either Leifer OR Botham.
Botham
Mondays, alternates 6:35/8:45PM start time, first half
This is an unlimited point event intended to provide a high level of competition. No team point limit. Due to popularity of Monday evening events, participation is limited to either Leifer OR Botham.
Strobel Instructional
Tuesdays, alternates 6:35/8:45PM start time, first half
Instructional league for new and newer curlers. Instruction for the first hour, short game for the second hour.
Lake
Fridays, 6:30PM start time, first half
Relaxed league with no point restrictions, but self-formed teams are encouraged to be balanced. Six ends are played with potluck dinner served afterward. Sign up as a team, a couple, or individual. This league has a reduced number of games and does not occur every week due to other club events.
Lake II
Fridays, 8 PM start time, first half
Relaxed league with no point restrictions, but self-formed teams are encouraged to be balanced. Six ends are played. Sign up as a team, a couple, or individual. This league has a reduced number of games and does not occur every week due to other club events.
Jerred
Sundays, rotating 3:55PM / 6:05PM / 8:15PM, second half
The Jerred event has a 39-point team limit, and no restriction on the skip position. Sign up as a team or an individual.
McNaughton
Sundays, rotating 3:55PM / 6:05PM / 8:15PM, second half
This event provides an opportunity for thirds, seconds, and leads to curl at a higher position than they normally play. The McNaughton event has a 35-point team limit, and those who skip in Leifer, Botham, the men’s and/or women’s events are not allowed to skip, but are encouraged to play other positions to assist in player development. Sign up as a team or an individual.
Stevenson
Mondays, alternates 6:35/8:45PM, second half
The primary intent of this event is to give members a second night to curl during the week. 50 point limit. Sign up as a team or an individual.
Waddell
Mondays, alternates 6:35/8:45PM, second half
The primary intent of this event is to give members a second night to curl during the week. This is a competitive event with no team point limit. Sign up as a team or an individual.
Ceilidh
Tuesdays, alternates 6:35/8:45PM, second half
League designed for newer curlers. Sign up as an individual and teams are assembled by the league chair.
Woody
Fridays, 6:30 PM start time, second half
This is a fun league with no point limit. Sign up as team or individual. Potluck dinner served afterwards. Theme nights involve snacks, drinks, decoration, and costumes. This league has a reduced number of games and does not occur every week due to other club events.
Friday Late
Fridays, 8 PM start time, second half
Relaxed league with no point restrictions, but self-formed teams are encouraged to be balanced. Six ends are played. Sign up as a team, a couple, or individual. This league has a reduced number of games and does not occur every week due to other club events.
MEN’S EVENTS
Mansfield
Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, entire season
Starting times vary by night. The early draw (4:25PM on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, 4:55PM on Thursdays) is a dinner league. Dinner league teams take turns cooking the meal, and players donate a small amount of money to cover the cost of the meal. The late draw alternates between 6:35PM / 8:45PM on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, or 7:05PM / 9:15PM on Thursdays. There are up to 85 participating teams divided into six shifts. The Mansfield Event championship playoff is made of 28 teams selected from all shifts. 45 point team limit. Participation is limited to only one shift of Mansfield.
WOMEN’S EVENTS
Toories
Mondays, 4:25 PM, both halves
Toories is a women’s league with dinner to follow. Teams take turns cooking the meal, and players donate a small amount of money to cover the cost of the dinner. There are separate sign-ups for first and second half of the season. Sign up is all individuals. Skips and shift captains will draft teams to have evenly matched teams.
President’s Cup
Tuesdays, 9:30AM, entire season
There is no point limit associated with this league. Register as a team or an individual. A light lunch follows with each team rotating the preparation duties. Individuals who are unable to commit to every week are encouraged to sign up to sub.
All-American
Tuesdays, 9:30 AM, second half
The All-American is a women’s weekday bonspiel spread out over four weeks, sponsored by the USWCA. An announcement will be sent to club membership when sign-ups are available.
V.I.C.E.
Thursdays, alternates 7:05/9:15PM, entire season
The Very Important Curling Event is a women’s league which runs the full season. There is a 45 point limit per team. Formed teams are preferred, but shift captains will assist individuals who are looking for a team or help find teammates to complete teams. Individuals who are unable to commit to every week are encouraged to sign up to sub.
MIXED EVENTS
“Mixed” indicates alternating men and women on a team.
Mixed Doubles
Wednesdays, alternates 6:35(7:35)PM / 8:45 (9:45)PM, entire season
Teams consist of two players only. No point limit. Rules of play are varied as two stones start in play and five are thrown per team per end. Games consist of 6 ends and are played in 1 hour to allow more games within each shift.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
Participating in an actual game is only part of the fun at the Madison Curling Club. The camaraderie and social aspects of the game area almost as important as the curling itself. Whether it is bonspieling at other clubs or socializing after a game at our club, you meet life-long friends in a curling club.
Youth Junior Curling – Open, on available Sundays, 12:00 PM, entire season.
Youth junior curling is open to youth age 8 to 18. Appropriate teams are organized and games are played after skills drills and instructional time.
Pick-up Curling – Open, on available Saturdays, 9:30 AM
Any interested member may participate. Arrive at 9:15 AM for formation of teams. Check the club calendar for available Saturdays.
Senior Curling – Open, members at least 55 years of age may participate. Senior curlers from area clubs get together Thursday afternoons at the Madison club for six-end games. Teams are formed from those in attendance. Seniors may also participate in WISCA or Mad-Mo league play. The 10-club league takes turns hosting games and lunch in this event.
Intraclub Curling Events
For MCC members only, events include the Gilmore Event (Open), All-American Event (Women), Fowler Event (Men), Sauerkraut Spiel (Madison vs. Arlington), and Glospiel (Open). These events include curling, social time and meals. See club bulletin boards to participate and see Club schedule in this Directory and the MCC Calendar at madisoncurlingclub.com.
Social Activities
Activities for members and their guests include club suppers, Ice Breaker Party and the Lauren Kosovec Golf Outing. Information about these activities will be available in the club and the club newsletter “Along the Hog Line”.
U.S. Curling Association State and National Championships
Senior men’s, senior women’s, men’s, women’s, men’s club, women’s club, U18, U21, mixed doubles, and mixed championship competitions are held in various curling clubs in the United States. Playdowns are held to determine entry into national events.
