Congratulations to the Madison Curling Club members who were among the top winners at the senior national championships for men’s and women’s curling! The winners will go on to play in the World Senior Championship April 20 – 27 in Stavanger, Norway.
Women’s Senior Championship
In a repeat win, the Margie Smith rink became 2019 Senior Women National Champions. Team members include Margie Smith, skip (Shoreview, MN); Norma O’Leary, vice skip (Silver Bay, MN); Debbie Dexter, second (St. Paul, MN); and MCC member Shelly Kosal, lead (Edgerton, WI). In 2018, this same team represented the USA in Worlds and took bronze. Wish them luck as they compete there again in April!
The Tracy Lawless rink took silver, with two MCC members on the team: Tracy Lawless, skip (Milwaukee); Kathy Pielage, vice skip (Madison); Susan Dukes, second (Madison); and Kristin Smith, lead (Milwaukee).
Portage Curling Club hosted the 6-team play down on March 1-3. MCC member, director for the Wisconsin region on the USCA board of directors, and immediate USCA Past President Rich Lepping participated in the award ceremony.
Men’s Senior Championship
Congratulations to the Geoff Goodland rink on securing the 2019 Senior Men’s Championship. The team includes Geoff Goodland (Eau Claire, Wis.), Mike Fraboni (Lac du Flambeau, Wis.), Dan Wiza (Waunakee, Wis.), Pete Westberg (Woodbury, Minn.), and Todd Birr (Ham Lake, Minn.). Mike Fraboni and Dan Wiza are members of the Madison Curling Club.
Goodland and team took first out of a field of 29 teams, winning all 9 of their games during the play down event in Mapleton, MN which ran from February 25 – March 3, 2019. They will also go on to represent the USA in the 2019 World Senior Championships this April.
